How to convert a civil partnership to a marriage

Are you in a civil partnership?

For many, one of the big hurdles to equality for same-sex couples has now been overcome. The Marriage of Same Sex Couples (Conversion of Civil Partnership) Regulations 2014 Act came into force on 10th December 2014.

Couples wishing to take advantage of this new law and convert their civil partnership can choose to do so in two ways:

1) by attending a registry office
2) by converting at an approved secular or religious venue

Whichever option is chosen, the couple must confirm both their identities and details of their civil partnership at a registry office before the conversion can take place.

Fee waived until December 2015

A 45 fee usually applies but this is waived where the civil partnership took place before 29th March 2014, but only for those who convert before 10th December 2015.

So now you can choose whether to quietly convert or follow the conversion with all the usual pomp and ceremony of a marriage.
